watermelon a palestine |
Watermelon itself is the
most iconic fruit that represents Palestine. Grown throughout Palestine, from Jenin to Gaza, the use of watermelon is very popular in some food recipes and Levantine culture.
The use of watermelon as a symbol of resistance began to be used in the 1960s by community movements. The Israeli government banned the display of the Palestinian flag during the Six Day War with Egypt, Syria and Jordan in 1967, reported by Bon Appetit.
Watermelon was available for demonstrators protesting against Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. The demonstrators carried watermelon slices as a substitute for flags.
In the 1980s, the Israeli government even confiscated all works containing red, white, green and black. Quoted from Time, Israeli officials closed 79 art exhibitions in Ramallah that contained elements of the colors of the Palestinian flag.
"They told us that painting the Palestinian flag is prohibited, but the colors are also prohibited,"
